Korean Shamanism
Korean shamanism involve shaman women who serve as mediums between Gods, spirits of the dead and powers of nature. She does this to solve problems or heal people. Shaman women along with their client engage in a ritual called Kut. During the ritual Gods and spirits are welcomed to enter the shaman's body and enjoy the feast. In return the Gods or spirits are expected to solve the problems of the Shaman's client.
During Kut, the shaman changes into various outfits each representing a different God or spirit. Women become shaman or exorcist by hereditary and others receive their vocation from the Gods. Once they become a shaman they are know as God's daughter. It takes three years of training to then become and independent shaman. Shamans are healers, dancers, and midwives. They have a strong influence over the community because, as stated before, they are a connection between the spiritual world and the human world. |
